Located in Howard and Montgomery counties, along the upper 12 miles of the Patuxent River, the park is comprised of 6,700 acres of natural areas and farmlands. Recreational use is primarily hunting, fishing, hiking and horseback riding. Paths are unmarked. Paths lead from parking areas at Long Corner, Mullinix Mill, Route 94, Hipsley Mill, Howard Chapel and Route 97 road crossings over the river. Hunting is permitted only in designated areas. A portion of the park is a state wildlands area.

Catch and release trout stream, designated hunting areas, unmarked hiking and equestrian trails.
Patuxent River State Park is located on the Howard/Montgomery County line between Maryland Routes 27 and 97 and can be accessed by taking I-70 west from Baltimore. Take Exit 76, or Route 97 south, and continue south to the point where Route 97 crosses the Patuxent River. A parking lot is available on the right. For other access points, contact Seneca Creek State Park, which manages this facility.
