Rhode Islands longest trail. The North South Trail starts in Charlestown on East Beach. The trail heads north through some of Rhode Islands management areas traversing small hills, passing by numerous streams and farms, dashes through many pine groves and passes some old grave sites. Camping along the way is a little tricky during the off season. campgrounds are recomended during peak hiking season. Water should be treated but you should have no problem finding water. There are a few stores within a mile to a mile and a half from the trail. Study up to find them because it is worth a trip into town. Management areas crossed are Burlingame, Carolina, Arcadia, Nicholas Farm, Killingly State Park, Durfee Hill Wildlife Management Area, George Washington Wildlife Area and Buck Hill Management Area. You can continue north from the end of the trail by hooking up with the Mid State Trail that heads north through Massachusetts and into New Hampshire.
