Algonquin Peak is the second highest peak at 5,114 ft in the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks. The summit offers 360 degree views of the surrounding since it is above the treeline.
From the trailhead parking lot at heart Lake follow the trail for about 1 mile to the first intersection. Take a right towards Algonquin Peak and start the climb to beautiful vistas.
This trail is very strenuous. It mostly follows old creek beds. Therefore it is very rocky and muddy. The weather at the top can be harsh. Make sure to bring appropriate clothing even on a hot Summer day.
There is a possibility for a long loop by passing the summit and following the trail to Avalanche Pass and Lake. Then connect with the Marcy's Dam trail back to Heart Lake. This is about a 12 mile loop.
From Lake Placid, NY follow route 73 eastward/southward for a few miles. Take a right onto Adirondack Loj Road towards the Adirondak Loj Wilderness Campground at Heart Lake. The trailhead parking lot is at the campground.
