Trail Map |
The trail starts in the Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa Park in Newbury Park, CA, but most of it is through Point Mugu State Park. It's a really beautiful trail with great views of Mount Boney and the canyon with several side-trails. It's an 8 mile hike all downhill to Sycamore Canyon Campground with a few park benches and outhouses scattered along the way. On average, the trail should take about 3-4 hours one way.
A few points:
1) If going in the spring/summer, WATCH OUT for the bees. They have a tendency to swarm in the bushes/trees along the trail, so make sure you pay attention for any buzzing noises.
2) There are snakes, mountain lions, and bears, so make sure to take proper precautions.
3) The trail does not go directly to the beach. To get to the ocean you have to cross the PCH, so that's something to be aware of.
4) Unless you want to hike the 8 miles back up, have shuttle arrangements made beforehand, as cell phones tend do not get any reception once you get into the canyon.
5) You will have to cross a stream several times, so I wouldn't recommend taking the shoes you plan on wearing to your next job interview.
From Wendy Dr:
- Go south on Wendy (turn left if you're getting off the freeway) until you reach Lynn Rd.
- Turn right.
- Continue on straight as Lynn Rd becomes W Potrero Rd.
- Turn left onto Via Goleta.
- Go straight down to the last parking lot to reach the trailhead.
