This hike will take you from Elk Garden Gap to Mount Rogers on the Appalachian Trail. Mount Rogers is the highest point in Virginia at 5,729 feet.
From the trailhead at Elk Garden take the white blazed Appalachian Trail northbound (Go across the road and through the gate). The first views of the area will open up as soon as you reach the top of the first hill.
Soon after you will enter the woods. At about 2 miles a blue blazed trail will meet the Appalachian Trail at a switchback. Make sure to stay on the white blazed Appalachian Trail towards Mount Rogers.
At about 3 miles you will reach an opening with beautiful views. Around 4 miles the trail will again exit the woods. Shortly after take a left onto the Mount Rogers summit trail. The summit is about 0.25 miles from the intersection.
Take I-81 to Exit 35. Go southbound on VA 762 to VA 600. Follow VA 600 to Elk Garden Gap.
