Trail Map |
Trail #102 climbs gradually to the junction with Trail #313 and visitors can then follow #313 south and east to a ridge overlooking the head of Rock Creek on the Beaverhead-Deerlodge NF. Follow the ridge south a few hundred yards to the top of Rooster Comb and a fabulous view of the Bitterroot Mountains to the west.
A loop opportunity is available using Trails #87 and #313 to tie into Trail #102, and then using Forest Road #75 to complete the approximately 13 miles loop (8 on trails and 5 on the road). Energetic visitors may want to add the mile into Kent Lake. Kent Lake and the upper portion of Trail #87 burned during the fires of 2000 and visitors can expect to see a dramatically changed landscape in the process of regenerating.
From Hamilton, drive south on Highway 93 approximately 3 miles. Turn east on Skalkaho Highway #38 and travel approximately 14 miles to Skalkaho-Rye (Forest Road #75). Travel south on this road approximately 18 miles to the Mosquito Meadows Trailhead.
The trailhead for Mosquito Meadows Trail #102 is located on the west side of FR#75 and has a stockramp. The trailhead for Trail #87 is a pullout.
