Trail Map |
This is a relatively easy trail with short climbs to Starr Falls and the lake basin. The area burned during the 2000 fire season and visitors will encounter a range of fire effects. In the lower portion of the East Fork drainage and in the lake basin, scattered patches of trees burned and many areas appear untouched. There are 3 miles between Starr Falls and the junction with Trail #313 that burned severely. Visitors will see regeneration of grasses, small lodgepole trees and a profusion of wildflowers. Frequent windstorms cause trees to blow down and visitors should use caution when traveling the area. Stock users should be prepared with ax and saw, in case blowdown blocks travel.
There are frequent opportunities to see wildlife along this trail. Below Starr Falls are willow thickets and beaver ponds that attract moose. Above Starr Falls, in the heavily burned area, woodpeckers and bluebirds make their homes. And you may see occasional mountain goats in the many rock cliffs.
From Hamilton Montana, go south on Highway 93 approximately 40 miles to the East Fork Road (Junction 472). Turn east and go approximately 18 miles to Forest Road #724. Turn south on this road and go approximately 2 miles to the trailhead. Winter conditions may prevent access by vehicle to the trailhead.
