Trail Map |
This trail follows the creek to a large waterfall within 2 miles. In the Summer you can take a swim at the base of the waterfall. If the Winter is very cold it offers a beautiful frozen waterfall. By continuing past the waterfall, you can reach the upper cascades and Barney's Wall.
Hike #1 to the Lower Cascades (4 miles roundtrip):
The trail starts near the bathroom facilities. Follow the trail to the first bridge. Cross the bridge and continue on the trail alongside the creek. After a short while, cross the creek again over a bridge. Continue upstream following the creek until you reach the "Lower Cascades". This is a large waterfall with a nice, but cold, swimming hole in front of it. To return to the parking lot, take the trail going uphill from the cascades. Shortly thereafter, you will reach an intersection with the Conservancy Trail. Take a left onto the fire road and follow it for 2 miles to the parking lot.
Hike #2 to the Lower & Upper Cascades and Barney's Wall (8 miles roundtrip):
After reaching the "Lower Cascades" follow the trail uphill to an intersection with the Conservancy Trail. Take a right onto the fire road. After .4 miles take a right at a Y intersection. The trail will go steeply down. Within a few minutes you will reach the creek and the "Upper Cascades".
Retrace your steps to the Y intersection and take a right and then immediately a left onto the Yellow Blazed Conservancy Trail. Follow the trail for about 1 mile through the woods. Near the intersection to Barney's Wall, you will pass a campsite on your left. Take a left onto the Barney's Wall trail and within .2 miles past another campsite you will reach a rock outcrop with a beautiful view down the valley. To return to the parking lot, retrace your steps.
Take I-81 to Exit 118B.
Take US 460 West to Pembroke.
Take a right onto VA 623 (Cascades Dr).
Tangent Outfitters is at this intersection.
The road ends at the trailhead.
