Watch the informational signs. This trail offers challenges to a wide range of skill levels as it drops dramatically from the plateau to the Allegheny River. Overnight camping is available at the Hearts Content Recreation Area.
Tanbark Trail is unique in that it offers hikers the opportunities to tie into other trails or visit unique areas on the Allegheny National Forest. The Tanbark Trail ties into the North Country National Scenic Trail. At the Hearts Content Recreation Area, the hiker has the opportunity to take a short loop trail through the Hearts Content National Scenic Area or even enter the Hickory Creek Wilderness for a two-day hike via the Hickory Creek Trail.
Enjoy the wildlife viewing as you hike. The vegetation found in the Allegheny National Recreation Area supports wildlife typically associated with older trees.
Trailhead parking is located at a pull-off on US 62 halfway between Tidioute or Warren, or at Dunham Siding which is on the Hearts Content Road at the junction of FR 116 and 119. From Warren or Tidioute, take US 62 to its junction with Hearts Content Road. From Sheffield, take the Austin Hill (Bull Hill) Road to the Hearts Content Road.
