From the parking lot follow the Headquarters Trail to the Shinny Trail and reconnect with the Headquarters Trail. Then follow the Upper Falls Trail to Upper Falls and High Shoals Falls. Follow the trail back to the parking lot. An additional 2.6 miles one way can be added to climb to an overlook at the end of the Chestnut Knob Trail.
Take I-40 to Exit 105. Then follow NC18 South until you see signs for South Mountain State Park.
