The Appalachian Trail ascends has been rerouted to follow the New River for a few miles. You cross a small creek with signs that say No Potable Water, Do Not Drink. Do not drink this as it is a drain for the Celanese landfill, which you will be passing shortly. Don't mind the smell or the plastic bags everywhere, it will end shortly. Most of the trail is all uphill. You will come to Pocahontas Road and you will have about 2.5 miles until you reach Rice Fields. The Rice Fields are extensive open pastures with rock outcroppings and are located on the southern end of Peters Mountain.
I started in the parking lot of the Farm Bureau Cooperative, walked down the road under 460. Walked up beside the bridge to meet the A.T. and followed the white blazes from there.
