Also known as "the back way to Dragon's Tooth" This hike begins at Hwy 620 at Trout Creek - where the AT crosses the road. There is parking for 5-6 cars. When leaving the trailhead - Start North on the AT - be sure to head North.. (you should immediately cross a wooden bridge over Trout Creek) You will ascend sharply at times - thru the first mile and pass the connector for the Pickle Branch shelter on your right. After reaching the top of Cove Mountain you will follow the ridge top for approx 3-3.5 miles until you meet with a side trail to the right that takes you to Dragon's Tooth-- A magnificent rock formation that allows sweeping views of the valley below. Care should be taken when climbing the rocks - as a fall from the top would certainly cause serious injury if not death. After visiting the tooth - make your way back to the intersection with the AT and continue down the mountain to Lost Spectacles Gap - and meet up with a marked trail on the left that takes you to the Dragon's Tooth parking lot on Hwy 311. (more information to be posted about how this trail is marked soon)
Pass the Dragon's Tooth parking lot on your left on Hwy 311 - leave one shuttle vehicle there. Continue north on 311 and turn left on Hwy 621. Go approx 2.5 miles and turn left again on Hwy 620. The trailhead is approx 1 mile in on 620 - after making a low water creek crossing - or using the private bridge at your own risk of trespassing.
