This trail, once maintained by the forest service, has been completely abandoned. While the blazes can still be followed, the trail is completely overgrown and the last 3 miles along Cove Branch are difficult to follow with NUMEROUS very large blowdowns (and a hornets nest).
Despite this, this trail is terrific for is isolation, solitude, and beauty. In late July we feasted on fresh blueberries and huckleberries. Cove Branch is a wonderful stream with numerous falls, wading pools and chutes.
Do not underestimate the difficulty of this hike. It is difficult to follow despite the blazes and completely unmaintained. But worth it if you like epic adventures.
There is also great camping at the trailhead making this perfect for pre or post car camping.
Be warned, the gps track 'starts' at the wrong place. The beginning is the little spur that goes to Cove Rd.
