Drive into Virginia’s State Arboretum and enter a world of beauty and tranquility. Tucked into the northern corner of the historic Shenandoah Valley, the Arboretum presents visitors with a choice of outdoor experiences, from exploring the most extensive collection of boxwood varieties in North America to birdwatching to sitting on a bench overlooking a meadow of spring wildflowers.
Visitor maps and news about upcoming programs are available at the information pavilion.
At the heart of the Arboretum is the natural beauty of its expanse: great stands of beeches, magnolias, and maples. Over half of the world’s pine species. A spectacular ginkgo grove. Rolling meadowland. Mountain vistas. Towering firs. Lake Georgette, host to many wetland plants and animals.
Each season brings new colors, textures, and moods to the landscape.
Home gardeners will delight in finding native Virginia plants, perennial gardens surrounding the historic Quarters building, and a raised herb garden abundant with culinary, medicinal, and ornamental herbs.
