Great Hike with outstanding views from the Ridge...

The first several miles to the ridge are very difficult. For me anyway.

The ridge walk was not so bad, but did have some ups and downs my legs did not appreciate.

Finally you descend back to the road on a lesser used side trail. This trail is a bit harder to follow towards the end where there is some water to deal with. It has eroded the trail a bit. It think that trail is called the Saddle Gap trail.

About a mile from the road on the Saddle Gap trail I surprised TWO bears in a tree not 20ft from me. They crashed to the ground and disappeared.

You finish the trail with about a mile road walk which sucks a bit... but what can ya do when you're dying for a loop.

I would rate this trip Strenuous for the initial climb the the ridge and the overall length.

Directions:

Take 501/130 from Glasgow south. Once you descend the mountain and begin to parallel the James River begin looking for Hercules Rd near the dam. Turn left on Hercules Rd and travel to the AT crossing. Park here. If you have 2 cars you could park the other about a mile further up to reduce the road walk at the end.
