Both overlooks sit atop rock outcroppings and provide nice views of Bradshaw Valley and Fort Lewis Mtn. The trail also crosses the road on its way to McAfee Knob. If you cross the road you’re going the wrong direction for this hike! Trail ascends and in about ½ mile comes to the first overlook, which is to the left of the trail. Continuing for roughly another ½ mile brings you to the 2nd overlook. The trail crests the ridge top after traversing the right side of a high knob. The overlook is to your left after you crest the ridge and just before the trail turns hard right and begins to descend. The short approach trail is marked with a blue blaze. You’ll hike behind several large rocks, pass through the opening to your right and sit on the rock for the view. You may continue hiking along the AT for several more miles for nice ridge walking.
From I-81 Exit 140 go north on rt. 311 until you reach the top of the mountain ridge. (about 8-10 min.) Turn left off 311 into the parking lot on the top of Catawba ridge.
You can also click on the marker on the map to get Google directions to the trailhead.
