This is a hike to the summit of Apple Orchard Mountain, It is .9 miles one way through some very pretty forest and a meadow of wildflowers. .6 miles in, you will come to "the guillotine" which is a rock formation. Once you reach the top, there is a naval radar station and some red oak trees that give the mountain its name.
Take the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Apple Orchard Mountain Overlook, milepost 78.7. Walk .2 miles north along the parkway and then hang a left onto the Appalachian trail.
