From the trailhead parking lot, follow the Appalachian Trail Northbound (into the woods). You will start to climb from the start. About half way, the vegetation will open up and you will be able to experience sweeping views of the Mount Rogers NRA. At Buzzard Rock, a rock out-cropping, you will have views from almost any direction. Continue on the AT and take a left onto a spur trail to the top of Whitetop Mountain. This is the second highest summit in Virginia.
