From the park and ride go around the Exxon gas station and take a left onto the grassy hill. You will find the trail at the end of the motel's yard. Take a right onto it and shortly connect with the Appalachian Trail. Take a left (southbound) onto the AT. After about 2 miles you will have reached the ridge line. Within a few minutes there will be views of the Cavin Cove reservoir onto your left. Continue for another 0.5 miles until you reach a nice rock outcrop with a beautiful view of the reservoir. In another 1.5 miles you will reach the Hay Rock overlook.
