What kind of shoes to wear for hiking?

What kind of shoes are good to wear when you are hiking? I have some boots but sometimes they rub my calves raw. I figure I need something with good ankle support, because otherwise I could sprain my ankle on a rock or something...

Good hiking boots are important for an enjoyable hike. It's difficult to say what boots are best for who. The thing to do is to go to your local outfitter and try some shoes on. Hiking boots will always fill stiff for quite awhile (maybe 20 miles) and then they will finally soften up. I prefer full leather, water proof, and high ankle boots. Also, getting a good pair of hiking socks is a just to avoid blisters. SmartWhool has been great for me.

Happy Hiking!

Hmmm... I'm not looking for anything too expensive, but I don't want to buy boots over and over again. (This old guy in my office would always say, "Buy cheap, buy twice!") What are good brands to look for?

The best boot is what fits your foot. Merrells for me.

Merells are one of the best hiking shoes. They cost around $120-$180. I wear them everywhere.
