This is not technically a campground. It is more of an upscale fitness retreat, but it offers some of the best hiking in California at its doorstep, so it is a great resource for those who love to hike.

My fiancée and I were fortunate enough to get the last spot (#3) at Bird Creek Campground on September 3rd 2011. It was a cozy site with a bathroom close enough by so as not to be a long walk. In fact, both bathrooms were close enough to all of the camp spots to make them perfectly placed in my opinion. Although many of the other campers found it necessary to drive their ATV’s the 20 yards from their camp to use them, why, I’ll never understand. When I first used the bathroom, I was very pleasantly surprised that it actually smelled good in there, like pine scent. There was even some hand sanitizer in the dispenser, and it stayed fairly pleasant for our entire stay of two days. The camp host that came by was very friendly and pleasant to deal with, as well as informative about the area and what to look out for. Another very pleasant surprise was the camp fee of $6 as opposed to $10 and up from some of the other, not even close to as nice, campsites. The only downside I noticed, was the lack of accessibility to the river from only our campsite. (which I guess explains why it was the only one still open on a Labor Day Saturday afternoon) The only way the river could be accessed is by going through someone else’s campsite to get there. We will definitely be coming back to this wonderful campsite again soon.

We stayed here in a travel trailer on a Monday & Tuesday. Although the scenery was beautiful & the site nice, we were kept awake all Monday nite by either people shooting guns or fireworks, laughter & loud music. This started about midnite & continued til 7am! We were unable to tell if came from further back inside the park or across Highway 2, which fronts the park. Such a shame because the area is so very pretty, the pool is clean & deep, WiFi, full hookups, courteous staff- but we will NEVER camp here again!

We had a chance to visit Wally World recently for the first time, and we couldn't believe just how beautiful the Mohican valley is. The Mohican river that winds through the campground was really popular with the various people canoeing, and even though we mostly enjoyed the fishing, I think we're going to go back and do one of the canoe tours by renting a canoe from the canoe rental places there.

Most sites are well treed and private; it is near the end of the road, so not much road noise. Can see the reservoir from sites, but it's a good walk, or short drive to get to. I'd rank this one even with Teal...This is more private, but Teal has better views and is closer to the reservoir, so if you want privacy go here, if you prefer better views go to Teal.

Douthat State Park is a beautiful park. There are activities for everyone (hiking, mountain biking, swimming, beach area, etc...). This is a great place to spend a family weekend.
