Sherando Lake Family Campground

Description:

Sherando Lake Family Campsites are part of the Sherando Lake Recreation Area. The recreation area is situated around a 25 acre spring-fed lake and first opened to the public in 1936. There is also a 7 acre lake - Upper Sherando Lake - a short walk from the family camp area.

The family camp sites that are reserveable are in White Oak A-Loop which are non-electric and Meadow C-Loop which has electric hookup. Facilities and improvements include picnic tables (1 per site), fire ring with grill, lantern pole, and serving table for each site. The White Oak Loop (A-Loop) has modern bathhouse offering flush toilets as well as a men's and women's shower. Water spigots for drinking water are located throughout the area. The area also features flush toilets at either end of the camping loop. River Bend Loop B (13 sites) and the upper loop of White Oak Loop A (15 sites) are available on a first-come-first serve basis.

During the season between Memorial Day to Labor Day, evening campfire programs are conducted on Friday and Saturday evenings at the amphitheater for campers and area visitors. A Sunday morning worship service is provided by local churches on a rotational basis for those who wish to attend.

Visitors to the National Forest are responsible for knowing the rules and regulations of the Forest and the area they are visiting. Additional information can be obtained by calling the Glenwood and Pedlar Ranger Districts office at (540) 291-2188. Office hours are 8 am through 4:30 pm (Eastern time) Monday through Friday.

The nearest groceries and gas are located in nearby Stuarts Draft, Virginia about a 15 minute drive from Sherando Lake Recreation Area. Ice and vending machines are available on site. A Visitor Center is located in the beach pavilion which provides Interpretative materials, books, maps, beach toys and a variety of gifts. Cellular phone service is not available due to the area location, but a pay phone is available on site.

America the Beautiful Senior and Access passes are accepted for one-half price off camping fees, but not electric hookup. The America the Beautiful Annual Pass is not accepted.
